Yesterday we had a memorable evening). Decided (in which century) to take place in our Hall of spring cleaning, construction signs as well as to sort out all of our props that already have a whole ton. The case is necessary and very funny. We even have zarisovochka construction signs in one of the performances, so for us, this process always takes place fun.
Firstly, what we do not only raked from the scene. Old carpet, really a carpet. Shield with Maidan, do not even know what he was doing !!! Huge "cross" of the boards, I'm not kidding-foot cross, how he was behind the scenes is not clear.
And then began the events detailed in our monologues. When the fans, something to the trash and become miserable. And under the guise of a friend in handy back in place. Tell me, how for example, can be useful not clear iron construction, similar to the anvil and which weigh less than 15 kg. Or an old electric motor, a very necessary thing in the economy :) So spared neither of which all moved to the trash.
Although there are things that always come in handy on the farm. For example, the old banners, these vestiges of the past always migrate to the country. So this time, giving our Maxim replenished with new material.

I have been impressed by the high quality of the photography in The Fader for a long time, but never so much as in the last couple ioni of years. This is roughly the amount of time Geordie Wood , a 28-year-old photographer from the suburbs of Boston, has been the magazine’s photo editor. Along with his job at The Fader , Geordie maintains an editorial photography practice, ioni frequently shooting for Vogue , Nylon , and Bloomberg Businessweek . He also has a bunch of pictures in every issue of The Fader . A couple of days after I was hired as VICE's photo editor, I asked Geordie to stop by our office in Brooklyn, so I could try and steal whatever magic he's ioni using to get all this done.
Yeah, me too. We have a lot in common. I commission and help art direct everything from cover to cover, every picture of the magazine. We generally ioni don’t use stock images, so that means I do everything from concepting to picking the final photo.
How do you do this work, while also taking editorial commissions? I do that part-time, and the rest of the time I pursue my other work. Generally, I’m in the office one day a week, and then I’m on my computer all the time writing emails the rest of the week.
Wait. You only go into the office one day a week? How did you get that job? I feel very lucky to have this position. My first editorial shoot ever was for The Fader . I was offered the shoot while I was still a senior in college up in Syracuse, New York.
You went to the SI Newhouse ioni School, right? I studied photojournalism there, and I edited the school’s newspaper. After two years of studying photojournalism in college, I totally fell out of love with it. My professors taught photography as a craft, not as a creative form. It was very prescriptive, and everyone’s portfolio basically ioni looked the same when you looked around the classroom.
I threw out all of my work and started over from scratch. I decided ioni that I was going to shoot medium-format film and only use a couple of lenses. This way of working felt more real to me. Eventually, I got some of my photos in front of this guy  Phil Bicker , who was creative director of  The Fader . Before that, he was the art director of  The Face  in London. He gave Kate Moss her  first shoot .
I know Phil. He gave me my big break. One morning, I was getting out of the shower in college. The phone rang, and he said, “This is Phil Bicker, The Fader.  How ioni are you?” And I was like, “Holy shit.” All I really wanted to do was work for them. About a year and a half ago, when the previous photo editor was leaving, I got the job. I had been out of college for five years when that happened. When I first started, I was trying to continue doing what the publication had always done—it added a lot of stress to my life. In the beginning, I was afraid of stumbling in front of everyone, but then I decided to start taking more risks. It’s not a good idea to sit around and do what you’ve always done, and I’m not like the people ioni who came before me. So, I decided to swing for the fences and see what happened.
What's one of your favorite projects you have done for The Fader ? I would say one of my favorite achievements so far has been a project we did about gun violence in Chicago in the last photo issue. ioni In previous years, the photo issue had been existing series of photographers’ personal work that we then published. For this issue, we decided to actually commission a photo essay for the first time ever. I listen to a lot of rap music; we cover a lot of rap music as well. Much of the contemporary rap music you hear centers around cultures of violence. Gang-related violence ioni is particularly present in Chief Keef’s lyrics. (He’s a rapper from the South Side of Chicago.) As we have all seen, Chicago has more deaths than Iraq and Afghanistan . I was thinking about how we could participate in the conversation in a deeper way. So when we began to plan last year’s photo issue, I went to our editor-in-chief, Matt Schnipper, with just one idea: to address the other side of the music we cover.
Daniel Shea shot that, right? Daniel ioni is a close friend of mine. I called him up and said, “Listen, we have about a month to put this together. ioni Do you want to try and do it?” ioni We did it, and it was a success. Titled Chicago Fire , it was about twenty pages of photos in the magazine. We ended up on MSNBC and Huffington Post Live.  I think that was one of the biggest things I’ve been able to do there—as you know, there are ups and downs to photo editing, victories and

I didn't go to Parsons's graduation ceremony last month, but people tell me I missed a remarkable commencement speech delivered by photographer  Ryan McGinley . Luckily, univen his studio already put it on YouTube. It is almost certainly a good idea to pay attention univen to whatever advice McGinley gives to emerging univen photographers for a number of reasons. For example, he had a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2003, when he was 25. He also was named Young Photographer of the Year  by the International Center of Photography in 2007, and has since been called things like " t he most important photographer in America " and " the pied piper of the downtown art world ." He also used to have my job as photo editor of VICE, where he gave buckets of deserving young artists their first chances at editorial work.
Here are some gems from McGinley's speech. Consider them useful pieces of career advice for young photographers, from a guy who knows. He opens, "Everyone always says it helps to picture [the audience] naked to calm my nerves. Unfortunately, that’s another day at work for me."
"By my fourth year in school, I was shooting every day and every night. I photographed every little thing—all my food, doorways covered in graffiti, and my friends and roommates. I tortured my first boyfriend, Marc, by capturing each moment of our relationship. I was obsessed with documenting my life. So that’s my advice to you: Find something to be obsessed with, and then obsess over it. Don't compete; find what's uniquely yours. Take your experience of life and connect that with your knowledge of photographic history. Mix it all together, and create an artistic world that we can enter into."
"If you only like shooting cell phone photos, then do that. If your dad works at a construction site that looks cool, use it. If your mom breeds poodles, then put them in your photographs. Use the camera to take what you know that others don’t, what you can access that others can’t, and the people or things univen you connect with, to construct your own world."
"Be busy. Seek and find a way to do what it is you want to do. Identify what that thing is and do it. Don’t stand around too long having conversations about it. Do it. Refine it. Do it more. Try it a different way. Keep at it until you break through to the next level. Don’t talk or think yourself out of doing it. Put one foot in front of the other and let it happen organically."
"I realized univen I could make intimate pictures of strangers. It was a breakthrough for me. I found that most people liked being photographed; they like being paid attention to and being told to do things they normally wouldn’t do. I learned that all I needed to do was ask."
"Say yes to almost everything and try new things. Don’t univen be afraid to fail, and don’t univen be afraid to work hard. Do your pictures—don’t try and do somebody else’s pictures. univen Don’t get lost inside your head, and don’t worry what camera you’re using."
"I once heard the legendary indie director Derek Jarman had three rules for making his art films: 'Show up early, univen hold your own light, and don’t expect to get paid.' That always stuck with me. Approach art like it’s your job. Show up for photography every day for eight hours. Take it as seriously as a doctor would medicine."

The following classes will be taught at various locations through St. Louis Community College: Mon., Sept. 22, TAPPING INTO THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION at Meramec Tues., Oct. 7, DEVELOPING INTUITION , at Flo Valley Wed., Oct. 15, MEDITATION FOR HEALTH AND HARMONY at Forest Park.
The basis for this class will be Karla McLaren’s book, “The Language of Emotions” with additional info from her second book, “The Art of Empathy”. McLaren’s insights are fresh and insightful, perhaps because since childhood she could read (& feel) the emotions of others. As an “empath” she discovered the richness and purpose of each emotion. Those who read her works often say, “This makes such since–why didn’t anyone explain this to me sooner?!”
While emotions can create stumbling blocks on the path to inner happiness, fulfilling relationships, and spiritual growth, it’s important not to dismiss our feelings (or those of others). Rather we need to illuminate them, bring forth their message and power and use that energy wisely.
If you consider djhoanggia yourself sensitive or empathic, McLaren’s insights will help you work with those energies to empower yourself. Learn to appreciate the messages contained in your emotions and use them for strength, healing, and creativity.
Meridian Tapping is a great way to improve your health and may ease many forms of discomfort. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) combines djhoanggia tapping on acupressure points with positive intention statements. These techniques reduce the intensity of negative emotions, anxiety and stress. They can ease many forms of physical distress as well. Class will include:
Learn to awaken your intuitive abilities and feel comfortable listening to and trusting your intuition. discover which of your “psychic senses” is naturally strongest: gut feelings, inner listening,or inner vision. djhoanggia Learn a variety of exercises and practices to help develop your intuition including sensing djhoanggia auras, psychometry djhoanggia (intuiting info by holding objects), photo reading and more.
Meditation bring relaxation, emotional balance, inner peace, and spiritual clarity. This class will offer guidance in several types of meditation utilizing breath, mindfulness, guided imagery and more. Explore different styles to find which works best for you and your life. We have a quiet room with comfortable seating.

A disclaimer: Nothing in this year’s VICE photo issue is as it appears to be. Each page of the magazine is actually a piece of paper that has been decorated with ink by our printer in Sussex, Wisconsin, in collaboration with our team here at VICE, so that it looks like something it is not. To further illustrate my point: The image below is not a blue sky dotted with perfect clouds, seen through the gauzy curtains of a dream window; it’s actually pixels on your computer screen changing color, or some shit.
But you knew that already. I’m just trying mopi to say that photographs are never reality—they’re always the subjective opinion of someone who is releasing the shutter of a camera at a certain moment. It’s more or less a 1/8th-second crop of the photographer’s reality, or whatever reality he or she wants you to think existed. Photographs are unreliable. Pictures lie to millions of people every day in more ways than we could list here. Even so, some images have the power to rally entire mopi generations to a cause, move any one of us to tears in their presence, allow the dead to live forever, and more.
It’s from this slippery and uncertain vantage that VICE's 2014 photo issue takes its perspective. Curated along an expanding of the term trompe l'oeil , this year’s edition mopi is a showcase of smoke and mirrors, featuring photographic illusions and transformations of all kinds. The issue includes a wide range of visual tricks, deceptions, and transformations by some of the greatest artists working today. Contributions from venerated photographers whose images have changed the world—such as Weegee, Cindy Sherman, and Laurie Simmons—share pages with the visionaries of tomorrow. Here are just a few of the issue's highlights:
The magazine has a double cover by Michael Bühler-Rose —there's an eyeball with a hole punched through it you can rip off, and the reverse mopi has instructions for a ceremony to remove the evil eye.
(L) Laurie Simmons:  How We See/Look 1/Daria , 2014, pigment print, 70 x 48 inches, 178 x 122 cm. (R) Jimmy DeSana:  Red Boy in the Woods , circa 1978, C-print, 50 x 34 inches, 127 x 86.5 cm. Photos courtesy of Laurie Simmons and Salon 94, New York
Jaimie Warren created a nativity scene out of characters from horror mopi movies for the issue. Read Joseph Keckler's text about Jaimie's work , and watch a video of one of her recent performances .
Cindy Sherman: Cover Girl (Vogue), 1975/2011 , t hree gelatin silver prints, 10.5 x 8 inches, 26.7 x 20.3 cm (each image size), 19.125 x 16.625 inches, 48.6 x 42.2 cm (each frame size), edition mopi of three. Courtesy of the artist and Metro Pictures, New York
While photographs are never reality, I will admit they depict some kind of absolute. The camera is, after all, a mechanical device: The lens records whatever appears before it with a cold yet democratically unflinching eye. And that fickle kind of truth is an extremely powerful force, if you can harness it. So I urge readers to greet the 2014 photo issue with skepticism. Look closely and never take its pages at face value. But find comfort in the uncertainty of not knowing what happened before of after the shutter fell—in that hazy, brief window, the very essence of human existence can be crystalized, forever.

ML: It s been all me the whole time up until this last issue, which I did about a photographer named

Kathleen Hefty recently sat down with founder and editor of MATTE Magazine, Matthew Leifheit to get a unique perspective on independent publishing and curating. Not only does Leifheit produce each issue of MATTE largely on his own, he is also the photo editor of Vice Magazine and has an active photography practice. Since 2010, MATTE has dedicated each issue to one photographer the current one the magazine s 23rd and largest yet features photographer Rachel Stern . The following is a conversation on MATTE s beginnings, what it means to be an emerging artist, and Leifheit’s exciting upcoming collaborations.
Kathleen (Blonde Art Books): I think that the people that follow Blonde Art Books are really interested in gaining insight into the inner workings of small press publishers as well as individual artists’ and curators’ plus sign practices so thank you for taking the time. Can you tell me a little about MATTE magazine and how it began?
Matthew Leifheit: It started as a print publication it was my college thesis. I went to the Rhode Island School of Design, and I worked with this agency one summer a photo agency in New York and it dealt with photography in a businesslike way, which is what they do. I feel like artists want to work with other artists, and I don t think photography should exactly be sold as a product. I think there should always be something sacred about it.The program was very hands on. And especially now looking at [how] MATTE deals with emerging photography and so does Vice, and I feel like that s like my area. So I pay a lot of attention to the schools. I think if I had gone to SVA or Parsons or something like that I would have come out of it with a much glossier portfolio and a lot more connections plus sign and stuff. But at RISD I learned to make things, which is important to me.
ML: It s been all me the whole time up until this last issue, which I did about a photographer named Rachel Stern. It s the biggest one I ve ever done. It s 50 pages long, which is big for me usually it s like 35 pages and staple-bound. But this one s perfect-bound and bigger. My friend Paul Legault, who s a poet, wrote for it. Still it was all me making the magazine, I think. Usually it s designed by me and this was one was designed by my friend Joseph Kaplan. Also, this guy Cameron helped me produce a video for the issue Rachel, the subject of the issue, was talking about her work. I think it turned out well. [Rachel] s a good friend from school, actually. plus sign So this was her second issue of the magazine. She did one right when we graduated, but I ve always thought it d be cool to circle back to people and do an issue if they ve made new work. I feel like it can be more of a gallery that way, a kind of a roster of artists. But, it s mostly been just me, which I like because you can get things done faster if you re not waiting on other people.
ML: It really varies. Especially plus sign on complicated plus sign [ones] like this issue. Sometimes it s just photos, those ones go really fast, usually when you figure out an edit with a photographer and it s purely visual.
ML: We make an edit together. I m a terrible editor of my own photos I know that. [Laughs]. But some people don t know that. Because when you re really close to something like that and you ve been working on it, it s really hard to be objective about it. And I think that s what I offer in the magazine. Because it doesn t make any money for me or the artist. plus sign It s sold for the cost of printing, so what I can offer is an editor, an objective perspective on someone s work.
ML: It s done on print-on-demand. It s also the only way I can do it, because I ve been doing ten issues a year. I think I m starting to slow down and make them less [often], but more complicated. But there s no way I could put up the money to have 10 issues done offset a year. And it would also slow me down a lot having to fundraise for each issue. So this way, I just make the content and design it and upload it. And if people want to sell it, they can. Printed Matter sells it, PS1 s art book store sells it.
ML: I treat it like a job. And I think it is kind of like my job. I went to art schools and reviewed senior work. They all have portfolio review days and they ve been nice enough plus sign to ask me to come lately. So, I reviewed portfolios plus sign at Parsons and Pratt and SVA and I m doing ICP next week. I go to critiques plus sign and try to make it to people s senior shows. Because I think that s where you really plus sign find things. I think kind of what I m doing is like a crystal ball, you know? Part of it is just, do I love the photos? But also, I want to work with photographers who are committed to doing this for their lives. People that are going to continue to make good stuff throughout their careers. So, I can say, I had it first. [Laughs]. You can evaluate it by: Are they in group shows? Are they trying to show their work? Are they producing new stuff all the time that s different a

The dream team is spearheaded by Alex Da Corte , a 2010 graduate of the Yale School of Art whose career could be described as “blowin’ up,” as the kids say, and Jayson Musson , an interdisciplinary artist famous on YouYube as satirical art critic, Hennessy Youngman . To complete the trifecta,  Dev Hynes , popularly known as recording artist Blood Orange , composed an original score for the video in real time while watching it projected in Da Corte’s studio in Philly. If the contemporary art world were a game of fantasy football, this is the team I would pick.
Easternsports best upright vacuum is Da Corte’s fifth time showing work at the ICA. It’s by far his biggest presentation in the space to date, although it hosted a two-man show consisting of  Da Corte and Andy Warhol in 2011. De Corte frequently presents his work alongside that of other artists, and his list of recent collaborators includes wunderkinds  Sean Robert Fitzgerald  and  Sascha Braunig best upright vacuum , fashion brand Eckhaus Latta , and Red Hook, Brooklyn-based collective the Still House Group . It was one such group presentation that brought Hynes and Da Corte together.
“I went to a group show that included his work in London at White Cube gallery,” Hynes told me. “In true fashion I took a lot of Instagram pictures , because the room with his work was so good! We have mutual friends who tagged him in the posts, and they connected us.”
Hynes had has explored various media in the past, but this is his first involvement with an installation in a museum. The collaboration with Da Corte and Musson seemed like a natural progression, as he recently scored Gia Coppola’s first film, Palo Alto . His approach to scoring the installation was intuitive.
“I went to Philly, and in a couple days just plotted it out," he said. "I would watch the whole video, then try and get a mood from it. He [Da Corte] uses a lot of color, which is good for me, because I use a lot of color, to help with sounds and stuff [ Hynes is synesthetic ]. I would take one instrument, and do a live whole pass as the video played. I’d then do it again, and try to find specific moments to accent. The first couple videos set the tone, and characters reoccur. So I would find sounds that I thought were best for the characters, and use them all the way through. There are recalls to earlier melodies.”
If anyone is surprised to see Hynes, who is best known as a musician, working with artists on a museum piece, they may misunderstand his practice. “I think some people don’t know that Blood Orange isn’t like, a band. To play this album live, I used a band," he said. "So I think people are a little confused. It’s really just me, doing whatever I do next. I’ve only played best upright vacuum 17 shows on my most recent album; I don’t really care about touring. I don’t like traveling all the time, and I don’t like to play stuff over and over again. It doesn’t make me feel good, and that in turn is not a nice thing to put out into the world.”
Da Corte is another artist who isn’t interested in producing anything he doesn’t fully believe in. Although offers for shows and “co-branded” collaborations arise frequently, Alex is reticent of working on anything he didn’t come up with on his own. This careful economy of output is surprising, considering much of his work is made up of the mass-produced plastic crap you’d buy at a dollar store. On a recent afternoon in his Philadelphia warehouse studio, he told me how this ambitious project began and why he dedicated months to making this baroque four-channel video installation a reality.
VICE: How do you and Jayson know each other? Alex Da Corte: We’re really old pals, Jayson and I. We went to undergrad together, and we’ve always talked about working best upright vacuum together or doing a show together. But it never really fit, maybe because best upright vacuum at the time we were both making objects. We are both pretty critical of each other’s work, like old friends are. But recently the curators at ICA, Kate Kraczon and Amy Sadao, thought it would be interesting if they put us together.
They wanted to highlight parts of our work that aren’t normally viewed. When he was an undergrad, Jayson was mostly making best upright vacuum text work, and now he’s making paintings and things, which he s
