Thus form, rhythm, pitch, timbre not discrete categories, but a continuum of one (exponential) scal


I recently found on youtube a plethora lectures Stockhausen held at 70s. In English! One of these is about electronic music and basic parameters of sound. He has the idea that form, rhythm, pitch, and timbre in essentially the same phenomenon, namely pulsations, just in different time dimensions.
Form exists in the time interval 2-3 hours to 8 seconds, rhythm exists in the interval 8 seconds - 1/16 second, pitch fluctuation is between 16 Hz and 10 Khz. Fluctuations of this overtones that says something about timbre. sign n
Thus form, rhythm, pitch, timbre not discrete categories, but a continuum of one (exponential) scale. The play "Contacting" (1960) exploits this by continually moving from one to the other.
He is also built on ideas that the French spectral composers would explore further: a piece of music can be compressed down to a second and go on to become one single sound, and conversely a single sound can be stretched out to be a whole piece of music.
