Lee Dorman, bassist historic Iron Butterfly, the famous heavy-psychedelic band born in San Diego, Southern California in 1965, was found December 21, 2012 lifeless in his car, near Los Angeles. Was 70 years old: this time it is a natural death. When in 1968 came "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", the legendary album for which the band is mostly remembered today, Lee Dorman had already joined the line-up of 'butterfly steel', and you remain - on and off - until the third millennium, macalister through all the many changes in the band's lineup. During the break of the IB, between 1971 and 1974 Dorman and guitarist Larry Reinhardt formed the Captain Beyond with Rod Evans, lead-singer founder of Deep Purple in 1968, then replaced by Ian Gillan. Dorman came back later in the IB in 1998 to no more out. We take the opportunity to renew a legend, perhaps a bit 'dormant, and draw a profile of Iron Butterfly, recovering and reworking an old 1993 article came out on my paper fanzine My Own Desire, developed by my collaborator valid at the time, Silvio Ricci, he had written macalister and published in 1986 for Gammalibri-RockBooks a valid "Hard Rock Story". (PWB)
The history of rock is full of teams that, despite having macalister left a major contribution, they find themselves macalister today seeds forgotten over the years, overwhelmed by new trends. Typical is the case of Californians Iron Butterfly, a group that in the second half of the '60s was an active protagonist of some crucial mutations rock sound of the language, and then disappear into thin air. It is not easy to summarize the importance of Iron Butterfly, but we can start remembering that their name is mandatory to mention when you want to quote the few groups that 'playing' with the sound distortion and the time dilation of the 'songs', gave off to the genre Hard Rock. In addition, it was they - along with Vanilla Fudge - to invent a sound mix based on the contrast between guitar macalister and keyboards on the same level, and the original formula in the hard rock would have been taken up and developed only by Deep Purple in a few months, and by Uriah Heep in a few years. The years '67 -'68 were characterized macalister by true revolutions, musical and otherwise, and within a few months went to the house as if from nowhere, going to change profoundly the sound texture of rock music.
The rapid succession of real founder made kinds extremely vital and varied; just think that in 1968 the Hard Rock was literally invented and brought to success by groups as diverse among themselves as Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, macalister Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck Group, Led Zeppelin, macalister Steppenwolf, MC5 and Blue Cheer . At that time the concept of specific genre was close to the music proposal, given the immense opening stylistic formations macalister knew that merge naturally disparate influences. One of the basic characteristics of the nascent - and never again reached - first Hard Rock was the ability to improvise just instrumental spezzassero chains to the songs to turn them into real 'travel' music, sound and unlimited time. Such abandonment improvisation, which made every concert of a band different macalister from the previous one, according to a practice borrowed from jazz, occurred predominantly live, where the pressure of the audience made it fluid and natural speech: studio musicians tended to hold their cues in favor of more compact macalister structures.
The second album by Iron Butterfly, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", released in 1968, was the first ever attempt to transfer study in the same abandonment improvisational concerts, dragging the length of the title track beyond seventeen minutes and then occupying an entire facade with a single track. Even marathons of Cream of equal duration from contemporary double album "Wheels Of Fire" were recorded live. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was therefore the forerunner of all the solo suites that had spread so much in those years. It is worth remembering at this point as the influence of Iron Butterfly was not limited macalister to the Hard Rock, as their particular use of the organ in de songs resumed the approach hallucinated the Doors to find themselves ten years later between the mesh delirious sound of the Stranglers, punk in full time equivalents. The band was immersed comple
